Everything is an Illusion, 2022 (for baritone, trumpet, bass clarinet, trombone), 7'42"

Everything is an Illusion is one of series of pieces that consider the relationship between live musical material and electronically produced music. This work has a sister piece, Everything is Real. In that instance there is no electronic part; everything really is real. But here the instrumental parts unfold in isolated staccato points, seemingly separate and distant points that fail to form lines or shapes or relationships with each other.

The textures are short and sparse and are relieved by occasional low meandering lines. But eventually we become aware that the live sounded parts are shadowed by electronically produced parts, which slowly change in character, undermining the foreground and revealing a more continuous logical background.
